Altona Refinery

these shots were fun to take, played around with zoom and distance.

thought the orange illuminating the background looked great. Quite pleased with how they turned out especially the first two. Wish I had a tripod with me though,

Peter Beste

BIO
Peter Beste is an American documentary photographer based in New York City. Known in particular for his precise and poetic portraits of subcultures.

His new large scale photography book True Norwegian Black Metal (208 pages. Hardcover 11.25" x 14.25" Vice Books 2008) is a seven year exploration into the dark world of Black Metal in Norway. The country's largest musical export gives birth to this notorious subculture- an obscure mix of Satanism, Nordic mythology, horror films and extreme heavy metal which aggressively forsakes Norway's religious heritage and contemporary mainstream society in favor of Nordic heathen gods and self-afflicted isolation. Long considered sealed to outsiders, this secretive and often violent scene gained international prominence in the early 90s through an outbreak of inspired murders, suicides, and church arsons.

Beste's essential photographic record of this unique and inherently extreme realm, in the context of Norway's magical landscape, mythological background, and strong sense of culture, has slowly reshaped its very aesthetic. Capturing what some have called "the most sociological telling pictures of the 21st century," Beste's unprecedented access and insight into this controversial world results in a stunning and honest visual testimonial.

Beste has been simultaneously photographing an in-depth study of Southern Rap culture in his hometown of Houston, Texas.

Beste has had solo exhibitions in London, New York, Tokyo, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo, Bergen, San Francisco, Austin, Los Angeles, Tilburg, Osaka, Atlanta, and Portland. His work has appeared in American Photo, Arkitip, British Journal of Photography, Dazed and Confused, London Observer, Modern Painters, VH1, MTV, NRK (Norway), XXL and many others.

......

.

Went out to Sth Kensington to these warehouses' that were in a fire a few back. The insides are all burnt up and covered in graffiti, I thought this place would be an awesome place to take some photos, I've often caught the train past and thought it would make for good photos. There was heaps of things to take photos of from burnt old books, basketball rings, a burnt up car, smashed up pinball machine, but I didn't like most of my shot, these are a few of the better ones I took.
Lately I've ben carrying my camera around with me in the car just incase I see something while I'm out. This has been awesome as I've had my camera for quite some times but would very rarely go out and take shots.

.....

I took this walking home from the station after uni. I pass this big box which is just plastered in graffiti for years, it always get repainted and then the over the next few days slowly gets covered with graffiti again. I wanted to get as close as possible to get all the markers steaks and spray paint, and to be be able to see the tags and spray paint underneath the cover-up. I wanted to make it look in a way like an abstract painting.
I took this photo walking home from dinner with some mates , I had to try and hold the camera as steady as possible, as I didnt have a tripod with me, I think it turned out preety cool apart from the slight blur to it. It got me thinking about doing night photography, and wanting to experiment a little with it. I went out a few nights later just around to places near where I live and took some shots.
